Do’s and Don’t’s of Coaching an Odyssey of the Mind Team
Do's
1. Do supply resources, materials and people.
2. Do help students generate ideas through brainstorming, refining and selecting.
3. Do help student stay on task. Be sure they all have jobs.
4. Do assist in organization.
5. Do foster responsibility amojng team members: clean-up, cooperation, listening skills.
6. Do help students with work schedule: long-term and short term goals.
7. Do keep tabs on progress. Check the progress of specific tasks.
8. Do encourage positive behavior among team members. You have the right to remove unruly participants.
9. Do communicate with sponsoring teacher.
10. Do communicate with parents.
Don’t’s
1. Do not do any work for the students related to the solution of the problem. No hammering, sewing, drawing, etc. You MAY demonstrate skills or provide people who can.
2.Do not contribute specific ideas.
3. Do not accept lack of task commitment. Report such behavior to sponsoring teacher and parent.
